Bilkis Bano Case: The convicts were given a hero's welcome
The Supreme Court provided huge relief to Bilkis Bano today by canceling Gujarat government's decision to release the 11 convicts who raped her and murdered her family in the 2002 Gujarat riots. The Court stated that the Gujarat government did not have the power to release these individuals and clarified that the decision rested with the Maharashtra government.
"The order allowing their release wasn't valid," stated the Supreme Court.
The men who were found guilty were set free by the Gujarat government on Independence Day in 2022 using an old law that wasn't applicable anymore. This action caused strong disapproval and anger from the opposition, activists, and the general public.
The men who were convicted received a warm welcome and were seen sharing the stage with a BJP Member of Parliament (MP) and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA). Surprisingly, one of the convicts named Radheshaym Shah had started working as a lawyer, which was highlighted and brought to the notice of the Supreme Court.
